How this site works for everyone
Last updated:
Where this stands right now
We want anyone to be able to use this site, including people who use a keyboard instead of a mouse, or a screen reader. We're aiming for WCAG 2.2 level AA, the current web accessibility standard, but nobody has tested this site against it yet, so we can't say it meets it yet. Below you'll find what's built in, what hasn't been checked, and how to reach us if something doesn't work for you.
What's built into the pages
- Every page has a single main heading, and the page language is set to Canadian English.
- Every picture has a written description (alt text).
- Every form field has a visible label tied to it, and the "best way to reach you" choices are grouped under one question.
- When you send the contact form, screen readers announce a status message as it sends, and if something goes wrong, keyboard focus jumps to the error message. After a successful send, focus moves to the "Sent to Jake" message.
- The menu button on small screens tells screen readers whether the menu is open or closed.
- In the photo galleries, closing an enlarged picture puts your keyboard focus back on the photo you opened.
- Links, buttons and form fields show a visible outline when they have keyboard focus.
- Nothing on the site plays sound or video on its own.
- If your device is set to reduce motion, the page's scroll animations are switched off.
What hasn't been checked yet
Nobody has yet gone through this site with a screen reader such as NVDA or VoiceOver, and we won't say that anyone has until it happens. Nobody has timed a full keyboard-only run through every page either, or measured text and button contrast, or checked how the pages behave when zoomed in to 400 percent. The list above describes how the pages are built, and a page can be built well and still be awkward to use.
Something not working for you?
If you use a keyboard, a screen reader or other assistive technology and something on this site doesn't work the way it should, tell us. Call Jake at 604-226-1233 or email jmclean@jmexcontracting.com, and say which page it happened on and what you were trying to do. We'll look into it.
If the contact form gives you trouble, call Jake instead. He can take the details of your job over the phone.
If any of this changes
Once someone's done a screen-reader and keyboard check, or if anything else here changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
